VINTAGE FLORAL DRESS AT NAPOLEON HOUSE

A few days ago I came home from my trip to New Orleans, this trip was a last minute one, since our flight to the Virgin Islands was canceled. Anything last minute is really hard for me because I am a big planner and try to research everything before I go somewhere. Therefore, when we arrived, I was feeling a bit nervous and completely at a loss of what to do first. I knew we wanted to go to the French Quarter, so we decided to wing it, get out a map, and walk there.

While we were sitting in the Cathedral in the French Quarter hungry, I found a restaurant on Yelp with great reviews. No one was really listening and I don’t think anyone knew what they were in the mood for so we just walked in the direction towards where I said the place was. The hilarious part is that they all pointed out the restaurant that I chose before any of us knew it was Napoleon House. But, I looked down when we walked through the doorway, saw Napoleon House and definitely gave an I told you so.

The food was divine at Napoleon House! We ate there twice! The first day I had an Avocado Stuffed with Shrimp Salad and the second time I had Roast Beef and Gouda Sandwich on Crusty Bread with a delicious Potato Salad on the side. Our fabulous bartender Mario made not only a delicious Italian Cream Soda (mine was peach flavored), but also a really refreshing cocktail with Pimms and lemonade. Then the General Manager, Chris, gave us a complete tour of the building. The Napoleon House happens to be one of the few landmarks in New Orleans and a favorite of tourists and locals alike. Most people aren’t allowed to go out on the balcony and it made me a bit nervous, but since he let us, I ventured out!

This is the dress I wore on our second trip back to Napoleon House. I thought that this beautiful old building was the perfect backdrop for my vintage looking floral dress! Can you believe that this dress is less than $20 from Romwe!

FINANCIAL TIP

Here a few trips for traveling on a budget that I wanted to share with you! Our trip was very last minute and we had already shelled out a few thousand dollars for our original trip. Therefore, New Orleans had to be kept low cost.

  1. DO NOT FLY SPIRIT AIR TO SAVE MONEY! Haha, ok no that’s not really my first tip, but really don’t fly with them. They canceled our flight and we had to dispute the charges with our bank, they were awful. My suggestion is not to fly with a cheaper airline to save money and to actually book your flight directly through the airline. My Mom used to work for a few airlines and my Step Dad is a freight pilot, they say fly Delta, of Jet Blue and pinch pennies elsewhere.
  2. Use rewards programs like Marriot Rewards, or Hilton Honors to book your hotel. You can get the BEST rates that way, even better than military discounts, or AAA. Many times they have what they call “off site” hotels that are still owned by them. We stayed at an Embassy Suites which had two rooms and since it was two couples we were able to split it.
  3. Look up restaurants on google and yelp to check the reviews, menu, and pricing. We ate at restaurants that were at a max of “$$”, which is mid range. Food and alcohol can eat into a huge portion of your budget, so also try to get a hotel that includes a free breakfast.
  4. Walk, walk, and walk some more. Transportation can really add up and if you rent a car you have to add in gas and parking. We used Uber some and even rode a trolley once while in New Orleans, but mostly we walked, so pack a pair of walking shoes whenever you travel.

VINTAGE STYLE WITH 42 DUBONNET

Ever since I was little, I have been fascinated with vintage styles. I grew up watching old movies and musicals and I wanted to wear the fancy dresses as well. One of my favorite outfits was when my father did an art deco shoot for his business photos, which  I got to be in, and I was dressed in 1920’s attire and the only one allowed to sit in the vintage Rolls Royce. Ever since that moment at 12 years old, I have been 1920’s obsessed. So, when I discovered 42 Dubonnet at the Orlando Makeup Show, I was absolutely delighted and knew I needed these products in my collection!!

Here is a photo from my 27th birthday, which was a 1920’s themed party.

42 Dubonnet, is a mother-daughter company. They strive to bring the allure, mystery, and electricity of the 1920’s Art Deco period to our modern time. They are based out of Miami, which still has an Art Deco presence, so are a local Florida company. I am all about supporting our local business owners. I love the discreet, yet beautiful packaging of the makeup which represents the speakeasy era of the 1920’s. The 1920’s woman was the first to put on a full artificial face with the use of powders, eye kohls, mascara, and lipstick. This was the time of the flapper where women could be more bold and daring, especially when they would go out at night. Women wanted to assert their feminine power and makeup companies began to create items that all flappers needed to carry in their purses. This way they could open up their handbag and easily go from a daytime look to evening glam.

Look at the compact packaging of these items. With these in your purse, you could easily do a complete makeup look.

I paired this makeup look with a gorgeous beaded flapper style dress that I purchased at Nordstrom. This was my bridesmaid dress for my best friend’s wedding, who also loves 1920’s and vintage style. I think this is a great look to wear for a spring tea party, a derby party, or even for a fancy date night.

These shoes are Colin Stuart and are from back when Victoria Secret used to sell all types of shoes. I thought they were very Art Deco looking.
