RUNWAY TO HAITI + BOHO VIBES

Runway to Haiti Fashion Show

Last week I went to a wonderful pre-event hosted by Rebuild Globally & Macbeth Studio which was to bring awareness about a wonderful cause started right in our own Orlando backyard. Macbeth Studio collaborated with Local Love to create a beautiful backdrop to use during the event for a promotional shoot. I wanted to talk about Rebuild Globally & their brand Deux Mains Designs, so that more people could understand their mission and how many people they have helped and can help in the future if the word is spread further. They also host an annual fashion show at the Country Club of Orlando called Runway to Haiti for all you fashion lovers.

Rebuild Globally was born from the disaster of the 2010 earthquake that brought devastation to Haiti. One woman, Julie Colombino had an amazing idea to replace the conventional methods of charitable aid with a thriving social entrepreneurial ecosystem. They have been vastly improving the lives the refugees living in impoverished Haiti for six years now through training and education which give them guaranteed employment. They have realized the most impactful way to relieve poverty is to combine the efforts of their non-profit with the for-profit sector. Out of this wonderful cause they were able to build their own brand for the products they were creating called Deux Mains Designs.

“Nineteen degrees north of the equator you’ll find a small workshop where artisan–owners source local leathers and re-purpose tires to craft beautiful handmade sandals. Inspired by its French translation, craftsmen use their own two hands to sculpt sidewalls into soles with a pride that comes from not only making something valuable for others, but also making a meaningful life for themselves.” – Deux Mains

When I think of these creative and inspiring artisans I think about the bohemian community. Bohemianism is the practice of an unconventional lifestyle, often in the company of like-minded people, involving musical, artistic, literary or spiritual pursuits. Here is a bohemian styled outfit that I wore last weekend when I visited my best friend in Ocala. My mother got me this dress on sale at Belk for $12 around Thanksgiving. (WHAT A DEAL!) I love it because it looks almost like a pineapple print on it.

BLUSHING OVER JORD WATCHES & DON’T FORGET, TIME IS MONEY

Jord Watch Reece Khaki Blush Leather

Ok, so I have some super exciting news y’all!! Jord, an incredibly unique watch maker, and I have partnered to showcase an exciting piece of jewelry on my blog. Spring is quickly approaching and this wooden and blush watch I was gifted by Jord is such a perfect addition to any spring wardrobe. I just can’t get over the craftsmanship of their watches, how unique each one is, and how lightweight it feels on your wrist.

Jord Watch Reece Khaki

I am really obsessed with the packaging that each watch comes in. I love to store my watches in their boxes on my dresser, so when packaging is as beautiful as this is, then that’s a win-win to me! I also love how they will personalize your watch with an engraving if you choose and how the watch is customized to fit your wrist! I hate having to deal with going and getting a watch resized after I buy it.

The watch is made in the USA and out of two different toned woods. Inside of the box it comes with an oil pen to keep your watch in great condition and a humidity pack which lasts 4-6 months.

This cool watch I received from Jord paired beautifully with my blush leather jacket and I let the wood make a bold statement by pairing simple neutrals of white and black with it.

FINANCIAL TIP

“Time is Money.” – Benjamin Franklin

Most of us have heard this statement time and time again. It is so popular now you could call it a cliché. This is an ironic relationship between two needed and precious resources in our community. We are always trying to find just the right balance between the two.

Time is most definitely financially related when it comes to paying off your debts. Whether its a loan, mortgage, or credit card debt the longer it takes you to pay it off, the more money its going to cost you. This is due to any fees or interest associated with those debts. I personally cringe when it comes to credit card interest rates. The longer it takes to pay off that debt the more and more interest accrues.

Think about this…you have a $30,000 in debt with an interest rate of 10% (which is low). If you are paying the minimum which is about $400 a month, then it will take you 10 years to pay it off and it will cost you $17.574 in interest. However, if you were to pay an extra $200 a month on this debt, then you would have it paid off in half the time and you would save $8,531 in interest payments.

Beware though, before choosing to pay off a debt early, it is important to be aware of any pre-payment penalties that could be assessed by the lender. Make sure you are aware of both the term of the loan and the interest rate when you borrow money because those items are what work against you when you borrow.

Now, even though time isn’t your friend with a loan. Time works in your favor when you are investing.

Consider the following example.  If you want to have $1,000,000 when you retire in 35 years, you can get there by investing $1,000 a month for 35 years and earning an average 5% rate of return on those investments.  However, if you waited longer before you started saving for your retirement and only 25 years between the time you started saving and the time you plan on retiring, then you would need to invest $1,900 a month to reach that same $1,000,000 goal! Just like when you refinance your debt, modifying the interest rate, or rate of return on your investments, can play a large part on how much money will need to save every month.  If you again only gave yourself 25 years to save for retirement and still want to amass $1,000,000 on less savings per month, then you would need to take more risk to achieve the same rate of return, or you would have to settle with retiring on less.

Now you can truly see that when it comes to paying off any debts, or investing, that time really is money.  If you have more time to invest the better off you are and staying debt free is better for everyone.  I recommend to just on a regular basis check your debt situation and your investments for retirement to make sure you are regularly reviewing your debt situation as well as your retirement funding strategy to make sure you are utilizing both to the best of your ability.

GREEN FLORAL DRESS + 7 WAYS FOR FASHION BLOGGERS TO SAVE SOME GREEN

Resort at Longboat Key Club

“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow know what you want to truly become.”

– Steve Jobs

In today’s financial tip at the bottom I wanted to help out some fellow fashion bloggers by listing a few ways we can save money, since it can be quite an expensive hobby!!

It’s the end of the week and this is the time we tend to jump for joy! I have an exercise for you though… What if you had no weekend. What if your 9-5 was all day every day. Would you still be happy? I want you to challenge yourself to think about what you truly want to do with your life. Are you living the plan that you envisioned for yourself? If you are and you are then that’s great!! Not everyone is as lucky as you. If you aren’t where you thought you would be, then think about what steps you can take to get yourself there. You can do whatever you put your mind to.

Fashion Bloggers quotes

I’m not sure what it is about flowers, but whenever I see a floral print I feel like it speaks to me. This green floral dress is the kind of fabric that even if it wrinkles it looks like it’s meant too which means it’s great for travel!! I wore this look a while back before we experienced our brief version of winter here in Florida. I thought it made sense to show off some green fashion when discussing ways to save your green. I also got this dress on a random trip to Francesca’s and it was on the sale rack for about $12. I hate to pay full price haha. I don’t really buy into the whole need to purchase an item right when it comes out, or that sale items are so last season. I look for styles that I know are still on trend, or are classic pieces. A shift dress is a staple closet piece.

7 FINANCIAL TIPS TO HELP FASHION BLOGGERS SAVE

  1. Buy your lenses used. For fashion bloggers, your biggest money maker is your photography. People love to see beautiful, high quality photos. However, even if your camera isn’t too expensive, the lenses can really add up. I purchase all of my lenses used off KEH. This is a great site and I have never had a problem with a lens. If you would like to see a post more about what lenses I use and how to use a camera a bit better to take blog photos, then leave a comment below.
  2. If you don’t want to pay for Lightroom, or Photoshop, then use PicMonkey. I have Photoshop and Lightroom through the creative cloud, which I think is reasonably priced at $10 a month. Before I purchased those though, I was using PicMonkey. Depending on what computer I am on at the time, I actually still use it. They also have an upgraded version, which I ended up purchasing which has a lot of neat extra options and it’s much less than Photoshop at under $40 for the whole year.
  3. Purchase items when the season is over and they go on sale. As fashion bloggers we are always trying to stay ahead, or at least on trend. This doesn’t mean you can’t shop last season’s sales though. In fact there are a lot of items that stay on trend throughout the years, or are classic staples. Look for these items during the end of the season because a lot of times you can get items over 50% off. Also, make sure to shop the biggest sale of the year, the Nordstrom Annual sale. This is where you can shop ahead of the season and most items are at least 33% off.
  4. Poshmark the items you are no longer wearing. So many people from all over the U.S. are on Poshmark. This is a great way to showcase your closet and make some money off the items you haven’t worn and don’t want to just drop off to goodwill. This is also a great way for fashion bloggers to introduce more people to you and your blog.
  5. Swap items with friends to make the most of your closet. My girlfriends and I are always borrowing clothes from each other. If you and your friends are very good at taking care of clothing, shoes, and accessories, then this could be a great way to broaden your outfit options without having to spend any extra money.
  6. Before buying an item research to see if you can DIY it for a lesser price. I am all about DIY projects. I just always thoroughly research an item and how I would create it before I decide whether I should make it myself, or not. Just because you can make something yourself does not mean that is the least expensive way to go, if you can find something used, or from an inexpensive site. Currently though I am going to be creating a vanity mirror for less than $60 when the cheapest one I could find similar to what I want was well over $200. That’s a good DIY project.  Keep an eye out; I will post how to make one on the blog when I’m finished.
  7. Reach out to stores and even places you plan on traveling and ask about free products to review, or discounts for bloggers. Many brands will reach out to fashion bloggers and offer free products in trade for social shout outs, or a blog post review. This gives them free advertisement and you free products, plus hopefully advertisement via their social channels. However, I feel like a lot of people don’t take the time to reach out to the companies they want to work with. If there is something you want to showcase on your blog, then pitch the company and create a strong media kit to back yourself up. Also, don’t forget that when you travel each place you visit is an opportunity as well. Ask about blogger rates at hotels, or even at restaurants before you go. This way you can plan your trip out ahead of time and work things into your budget. Make sure you are only taking sponsored opportunities that work for you and your brand though. You want to always stay true to yourself and what makes you unique.

Happy Friday!
